Freeze – Remember Hiroshima

August 8, 2008 – 11:33 am

On Wednesday there was an action starting at the Powell St. Bart station and moving across the street to the shopping mall, which has 9 floors and lots of shoppers. Most of the demonstrators had a sign pinned to them saying, “No Attack on Iran”. At a given signal by a World Can’t Wait organizer, the demonstrators froze in place for 5 minutes. It was well coordinated, and short enough so that the security and police were powerless to act. It was peaceful and fun.

After the freeze in the shopping center, the group moved back across the street, rallied, and then had another short action outside, including in Market Street. This freeze lasted four minutes, auto traffic was stopped, horns blaring, and with some tempers rising.

Impeach Both composition

August 2, 2008 – 3:05 pm

The most recent Impeach at the Beach event was held at Ocean Beach, in San Francisco, on April 26, 2008. At that time we were going to spell out “Impeach Both”, using the people attending to fill the space to spell the words. Well… There weren’t enough people and the event was close to not happening, when it was suggested by Tom Heinz, the photographer, that we do each letter individually, photograph the letter from the helicopter, and then have the folks move on to the next letter. It was fun and worked out very well. Tom had a lot of shots of each letter, and now came the task of putting them all together. You’re trusty correspondent volunteered to collaborate with Tom, and together we created the composite that spelled out “Impeach Both”. The angles were not uniform and it was a hard, fun task that took us about 11 hours.
