Amy Goodman of “Democracy Now” arrested

September 1, 2008 – 8:54 pm

It seems that the authorities are goin’ nuts in St Paul. Very surprising and disturbing ls the report that world renowned journalist, Amy Goodman of Democray Now was arrested and detained late this afternoon and charged with “conspiracy to riot.”

According to some reports the police have been staging raids on potential demonstrators in an effort to stifle free speech. “…this morning’s raids appeared to target members of “Food Not Bombs,” which he described as an anti-war, anti-authoritarian protest group.” These are pre-emptive arrests that can only happen in a police state, and they’re happening here. I can only hope that someone in the media gives this the national attention that it needs to have. Wake up folks. That means you and me.

  2. The “War on Terror” truly has come home with the Ramsey County district attorney charging 8 of the protesters from the RNC Welcome committee with what amounts to charges of Terrorism. US citizens being labeled and charged as terrorists for there decanting opinions and “planned” actions. The RNC host committee is just as much to blame, making a deal with Saint Paul to provide the first $10 million for liability in lawsuits so that they can use sweeping abusive powers without fearing damage. No one in the major media is, or probably will, cover this issue. Those who have toughed on ti have generalized it to a couple groups of angry, violent, anti-American, anarchists. Seemingly ignoring the fact that these are the rights of all of us being trampled, not just those of a few easily labeled protesters.

  3. No kidding! Did you hear any follow up about the 2 producers? The last I heard they were being charged with something like conspiracy to riot. Jeezus. It is amazing how close to the surface authoritarianism always is.

  4. The last post on the democracynow.org site was on Sept. 3, with no new news. At that time they were asking people to respond to authorities demanding that they not press charges against the producers, and that they drop misdemeanor charges against Amy Goodman.
