Point Reyes National Seashore

January 2, 2009 – 4:47 pm

Yesterday we returned to Pt. Reyes with some friends and spent several hours at Drake’s Beach. It was a beautiful, sunny, fantastic day, great for walking on the beach. Once again, we were fortunate to find elephant seals laying about. Most of them are alone; at most we saw two together. A ranger that I spoke to said that they call these seals that are alone like this “the losers.” They are non-competitive males that are unable to gather a harem. There is a large gathering of elephant seals further up the beach that is closed off to people. You can view them from above, but not at beach level.

  2. Puleeeze – stop harassing the loser elephant seals!
Really, though, they are quite cute, and if I didn’t live in landlocked Wisconsin I would adopt one!
I also really love the pic from last year in B&W. Was this done in your camera or in Photoshop? I am wondering if you notice a difference in the way they might treat converting from color to B&W?

    Happy New Year.

  3. Those poor losers – I can empathize. It took me a long time to finally “get the girl”.

The B&W conversion is done in Photoshop. I can previsualize when I take the photo, but I have so much more control if I make the conversion in Photoshop.

  4. Your portraits are so rich with love. Excellent work Fletcher. These elephant seals are really cool the way you found those moments of expression and light. Great animals. Glad I came to visit your site.
